The crucial factor here is whether the government in the developing
country will allow a private company (NOT the local PTT [phone company])
to set up a satellite teleport. If the answer is yes, depending upon location,
the cost can be as low as $50,000 but can range up to $500,000.
There are two parts: the satellite connectivity and the Internet link. Getting
a T1 (1.544 Mbit) Internet link that allows one to feed other nets as well
as allow commercial traffic can be gotten through ans.net for $72,000 per
year. Add the local loop from ans.net to my satellite teleport in the
United States ($1000/month) as well as the amortized cost of a 5 year
lease on spread spectrum didgital radio microwave local loop in your country
(another $4000/month) and the total Internet cost is $11,000/month. The
second part is the duplex satellite space segment. Official COMSAT costs
are $18,000/month for a T1 but I can get it for as low as $10,000 using
other satellites. Depending upon your location you can use a satellite
teleport as cheap as $50,000. Amortized over a 5 year lease this comes
to another $1000/month. So your total cost without satellite monitoring
and satellite modem can be as low as $22,000/month. If you plan on large
bandwith (say 12 megabits) you might want a $500,000 11 meter antenna.
We're now setting up Internet connectivity in a number of developing countries
as well as in the former Soviet Union.
Be prepared for a lot of hard work ! But the end result is rewarding.
